After days of sweltering heat, the Clarence Pedal Party found itself rolling out onto Main Street from Murphy Brown’s Craft Beer Empourium on a beautiful evening with sunny skies and temps in the low 70s. Hundreds of Clarence residents were joined by riders from throughout Western New York, and by ride time a crowd of 500 riders had massed together for the 12-mile route.
The giant group ride took in sections of Main Street and wound its way through several Clarence neighborhoods. Local residents dotted the route, many curious to see so many bikes in one place. Riders cheerfully greeted them with waves, shouts and chimes from their bells. For riders it was a unique opportunity to see neighborhoods they hadn’t visited or were seeing for the first time in a new light.
Escorted by Sheriff motorcycle patrol officers, the ride rode at a “party pace,” coasting along the descents and slowing for a coupe of steeper climbs before returning back to Murphy Browns for an after-party featuring live music by Christopher Joel, icy-cold craft beer from Murphy Brown’s and tasty food from Cheesy Chick and Maria’s Bene Cibo Food Trucks. Murphy’s owners Drew and Renee Brown and their staff kept everything moving smoothly.
Dozens of orange-shirted volunteers from Slow Roll Buffalo made trek out and kept the ride moving smoothly, aiding with flats and minor repairs, helping riders keep together, and providing encouragement to riders when the group reached the West Hill.
Special thanks to the Clarence Highway department, who had their sweeper out on Town roads in advance of the ride to clear up debris and keep riders safe.
The event was the first in a series of FREE Clarence group bike rides co-promoted by Slow Roll Buffalo and Discover Main Street. Next up is the Clarence Saturday Bike Stampede with host Brennan’s Bowery Bar (Main & Transit) on Saturday August 25th.
